Meeting Minutes for Mon 12/05/08

Minutes for inaugural meeting of cellml.org design & content working group

Present: James Lawson, Gareth de Walters, Catherine Lloyd, Poul Nielsen, Tommy Yu

Sites goals: what information are we trying to disseminate, and to whom, and for what purpose

  • SBML.org has had a major revamp of their site, and the group agreed that the cellml.org site could take their design principles into consideration.
  • They have moved from an emphasis on all the tools that support SBML to an architecture based around three primary groups they want to communicate to:
    • people who are curious
    • modellers
    • software developers
  • We also want to target these three major groups with the cellml.org site.
  • One particularly important message we want to communicate is why people might choose CellML as a technology to use in their research - this information needs to be prominent.
    • The relationship CellML has with SBML is important in this regard.
  • We want the site to be a focal point for the CellML community
    • James is keen to encourage groups working with CellML to put content such as project and working group descriptions, proposals, news, etc. up on cellml.org. Solicitation of content from the community is probably the place to start here.

Site identity

  • CellML is part of the Physiome Project and as such we should emphasise this as part of the identity of the site
  • The Physiome Project is widely recognised in the international life sciences community so this association may help in the branding of CellML
  • It may be possible to get a professional Plone skin designed for the site, but consensus is that we currently have more important issues to tackle before we consider this.

Information architecture

  • We should arrange the information on the site so as to make it intuitive to browse.
  • We can organise content according to what audiences we are communicating to.
  • This is an area that will require considerable thought, and a thorough audit of what content we currently have on the site is necessary before we can make progress here.

Content audit

  • A comprehensive content audit of the site is to be the first major task for this working group.
  • We need to identify:
    • What content is currently on the site
    • What content is out of date
      • and needs updating
      • or simply removal
    • Whether there are any large holes in the content coverage of the site with respect to our site goals

Actions

  • The group will meet again in two weeks, at 10am on May 26th, level 5 'cosy corner'
  • In the intervening time Catherine and James will begin the content audit of the site
  • 'Secondary items' from this meeting's agenda were not specifically addressed and will be carried forth to the next meeting
